Big Wheels look cool why?It seems a no-brainer that custom wheels, performance tires and lowering kits go together. Were talking about style after all. It’s the “look” you’re after, that combination of paint, stance, and wheels, which define the coolness of your ride. After you’ve dressed her with paint and bodywork, corrected her altitude with a lowering kit, you should give her jewelry. Wheels (like jewelry) are the easiest way to make a dramatic change in the look of your truck, and probably the most expensive. So it pays to do research before you plunk down your very hard earned dough! |

What are the benefits, (besides looks) of large wheels? You have probably noticed NASCAR & INDY cars or any vehicle prepared for competition aren’t running around on 15” steel wheels with uni-wear, all weather belted bias ply tires. They sport large wheels with low aspect-ratio tires. This gives them a large “contact patch” that improves handling. More rubber on the road enhances cornering, stopping, as well as acceleration. They also are coupled with a suspension designed to keep them low to the ground to make the wheel/tire combo perform to their potential. You get style and performance! |

They cost a lot right?Well yes, for trucks and SUVs you can count on spending a couple thousand dollars minimum for a wheel and tire package, and perhaps several thousand dollars for the really big bling. This could be the single biggest expense you have while building your custom truck and you should check with your insurance company to make sure your covered in case your bling gets filched. |

Other things to consider! It is wise to consider which lowering kit you are going to use before you choose your wheels. Wheel clearance problems after lowering is a frequent frustrated tech call and can be avoided. Time for a shameless plug, it is well known that control arms give you more possibilities of wheel choices than spindle or springs. Calmax Control arm systems are regarded the best of these control arms, and installers consider Calmax the easiest to install. You can use almost any wheel made for your truck/SUV including factory if you use a Calmax lowering kit but it is always a very good idea to lower first and then fit wheels to your truck. It is almost impossible to return an installed suspension kit or an installed wheel so be sure before you buy! |

Ride QualityOften ride quality is not talked about when choosing wheels and tires, but you should. Really big wheels with 35, 40, 45 series tires look cool but because of the super thin sidewalls ride pretty rough. Here’s a tip - Do not exceed the factory overall wheel and tire diameter when choosing. This is called “plus sizing” done all the time and you should talk to a professional wheel and tire guy about it. Basically it is increasing the wheel diameter and reducing the height of the tire to maintain the factory diameter. Keeping the same diameter as stock keeps your speedometer, odometer, anti-lock brakes, and other systems controlled by on board computers all synced up and in the groove! |
